Laparoscopic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery in which the surgeon sees and operates inside the body through a small tube which is connected to a video monitor. Minimally Invasive procedures can show significant benefits to you as a patient.

Some of these benefits are:

Quicker recovery – The incision is small, so recovery is much faster. Depending on your daily activities, you could resume your normal routine in just a few days, or sometimes even less.

Little or no scarring – Tiny incisions are used with Laparoscopy so they not only heal more quickly, but they leave very small scars which most likely become invisible over time.

Less pain – The biggest benefit of laparoscopic surgery to many patients is the significantly reduced pain after surgery.

Outpatient surgery – Laparoscopy frequently means an overnight hospital stay is not necessary. Most patients are more comfortable in the familiar surroundings of home and family.

Dr. Kuperschmit Specializes in minimally-invasive Surgery, because he repeatedly watches his patients return to active lifestyles much sooner than other open hernia repairs such as the “plug and patch.”

Why a Balloon?

There are two types of Laparoscopic Hernia Repairs. Dr. Kuperschmit is highly skilled in both. One Lap repair enters the abdominal cavity. Traditionally, before laparoscopy was available, surgeons repaired hernias without entering the abdominal cavity.  balloon

Early Laparoscopic Techniques didn’t allow surgeons to re-create time-tested hernia repairs. The Laparoscopic Extraperitoneal Hernia repair with balloon dissection allows the surgeon to immulate traditional hernia repairs with the advantages of Laparoscopy. In a recent multicenter study,  10,000 procedures were performed using Lap techniques the recurrence rate was around 0.4% of all patients in the study. The national average for open repair is 10 to 13%. This study also found that in open hernia many hernias are “Missed due to the doctor not being able to visualize both sides of the the patient.

With the Balloon technique Dr. Kuperschmit is able to visualize and repair both sides (bilateral) without invading the abdominal cavity and with three tiny incisions. Dr. Kuperschmit has adopted this technique for obvious clinical benefits and routinely uses the Balloon assisted Laparoscopic hernia approach for his patients. Only the most skilled surgeons can offer this technique to their patients. The biggest benefit to the patient is that FULL RECOVERY CAN USUALLY BE EXPECTED WITHIN 1 WEEK!
